Description
Product Description
Vladimir Kagan was born in Worms on the Rhine, Germany in 1927. When he was barely 11 years old he emigrated to the United States in 1938. His first passion was painting and sculpture but he progressively became absorbed by his curiosity in the fields of architecture and design where he developed exceptional skills thanks to his natural talent. Son of a master cabinetmaker, Illi Kagan, Vladimir studied Architecture at Columbia University. At the age of twenty, in 1947 he joined his father and began working in his woodworking shop. It is from that starting point that he would learn furniture making from the ground up.
His first important project was designing furniture for the Delegate’s Cocktail Lounges for the first United Nations Headquarters in Lake Success N.Y. (1947-48). In 1948 Vladimir opened his first shop in New York on East 65th Street and moved to fashionable 57th Street in 1950. He instantly gathered a strong following amongst luminaries in the world of art, theater, music and industry.
To this day, avid art enthusiasts and design connoisseurs as well as museums, are collecting his designs. Private collections boast Vladimir Kagan’s furniture and his award-winning creations are present in the most distinguished permanent collections of the V&A London, the Vitra Design Museum and Die Neue Samlung in Germany as well as in the most prominent museums in the United States. The amount of prestigious publications, books and magazines that praise his work are innumerable.
