How these 6 lighting tricks will make your home a brighter and more pleasant habitat to live in

Posted on by Thuy Nguyen / Posted in Uncategorized | Tagged , | 2 Comments

Ever wondering about how to optimize the look of your home sweet home? Have you already taken care of the furniture and other things but still feel like something is missing? Is it about the wall or the the color?
Your next consideration should be improving your house lightings. Why indoor lighting matters ? Lighting is a very subtle yet efficient way to optimize the look of your apartment. With the right knowledge and application you can bring your house to the next level.

Today we will share with you our expert’s knowledge about how to make the most efficient and appealing lighting for every room of your apartment.

Living room

When it comes to the living room, usually they’re the biggest areas in any apartment. Hence, the lighting condition should be good enough to provide a bright and pleasant living space. You can consider using floor lamps and chandeliers to create a warm and smooth atmosphere for your living room.

But if you want to swap out your ceiling lighting, consider about using wall lights as much as possible to create a modern look for your living room.

Expert tip: living rooms are sometimes used for different situations or occasions. Try to use dimmers to vary the brightness according to the occasion and situation. You can choose a less intense and more “lounge atmosphere” lighting for a warm night with family or a small intimate party with friends if you want.

Kitchen

lighting trick for appartment

The kitchen is a place where style should be chic and bold. Most of your guests will tend to be there so be creative as much as you can to bring joy and comfort to your kitchen. Try to focus the light on where you cook and diffuse the light warmly over your kitchen. Rounded bulbs are the best option.

What happened if your kitchen is so big that it is difficult to light it properly? In this case use the mirrors to add effects and enhance the light in your kitchen’s space. The image above is an example of using right color and light effect to create an entertaining and intimate mood.

Expert tip: Use warm-colored lights such as yellow to make your kitchen look warm and modern.

Bathroom

bathroom lightings

The bathroom should be bright and have enough light to radiate and demonstrate the cleanliness and make every guests feel safe without worrying about hygiene issues. Acknowledge this, and give the lighting center stage to enhance the cleanliness as well as the original decoration of your bathroom. Natural light can also be a precious ally in this sense.

bathroom lighting

First of all, you should have enough light. Don’t be so thrifty when it comes to the bathroom. Consider about adding different types of lamps to make the bathroom look lively ( table lamps, wall lights, etc…)

Expert tip: Incandescent bulbs work very well for the bathroom. Be careful about how you’re going to install the lighting system if you don’t want to make your guest dazzle when they using the bathroom. You can also take advantage of using a big wall-mirror for added-effect.

Office / Working desk

working desk lighting

This is where you should use the same tactic as for your kitchen – focusing light on the working spaces. This is where you should consider about having a desk lamp. The benefit about having one is that it forces you to stay focus on certain point for long time without being getting distracted.

It’s certain that there’s no point to have light spread evenly all over the room when you’re only trying to focus on your desk.

Expert tip: Try to get a desk lamp with which you can adjust the height of the bulb. Be precise about your style, go modern or stay classical, there is a desk lamp for every option. Remember that style is personal, desk lamps have many variations ( size, shape, material, design, etc… )

Bedroom

bedroom lightings

In the bedroom, it’s better to focus on creating a relaxing mood  and a tranquil atmosphere. The trick is having lamps emit light below your line of sight. Considering having table lamps at your bedside table.
The lamps should provide a soft and diffused light and should also be dimmable so you can adjust the light as you wish.

Expert tip: You should think about where your light should be located inside the bedroom and it should also be bright enough so you can change the clothes and inspect your closets with ease.  Having more lights with low wattage to cover dark corners is still a better solution for bedroom.

Hallway

hallway lightings

Your hallway is the connection between every room of your house therefore it should look fantastic no matter what. People tend to forget about this when it comes to lighting their house.

Expert tip: This is where you should be as bold as possible, even a little bit wild. Try to use lights in different shapes and different styles like wall-lamps, ceiling lights, etc…

This furniture exhibition was initially intended for Vietnam’s domestic market. Hoping to link buyers of furniture and interior decoration items with top and emerging Vietnamese furniture factories, its success has exceeded expectations. In this sense, we can see more and more international buyers coming to this furniture exhibition every year.

The international furniture buyers that come to this furniture fair are relatively small buyers but it still adds a touch of color to the furniture fair.

11 easy interior decorating tricks to make your small apartment look bigger

Posted on by Imagine Vietnam / Posted in designer-furniture | 2 Comments

Article written by us for a Vietnam’s number 1 real estate website (muabanhnhadat.com.vn), specifically for new apartment owners in Vietnam

As more and more of us purchase new homes, we are often challenged with creating a nice and attractive living environment while only having limited space to do so.

It is important to have a home where the atmosphere is clean and spacious, not cluttered and crowded. By organizing correctly your available space and choosing the right furniture you can make your apartment appear as bigger, tidier and tastefully decorated.

Here are some interior decoration tips that can help you make the most of the space available in your home and will amaze your guests.

If you apply these tips correctly, a small and crowded apartment will seem more spacious and well organized, making it a pleasure to live there, for you and your family.

1) Use multi-purpose furniture

If you are really in need of space, choosing furniture items that can fill two or more different functions is one of the first choices you should make when furnishing your apartment.

In small apartments in European cities like Paris or London, due to the very high cost of real estate, there is a very useful solution to the lack of space and it can be easily applied in Vietnam: using a sofa that can also become a bed.

There are different types of sofas that can do this, ranging from the very basic but effective “clic-clac” sofa to the more elaborate and high-end sofa-bed.

Keep in mind that low-quality and cheap sofa-beds will soon become uncomfortable as the mattresses will loose shape and the opening mechanism will fail over time. Choosing imported high-quality furniture will ensure that you enjoy both functions during a long time while having a modern and designer looking furniture item.

This sofa bed is designed and made in Milan, Italy, high-end fabrics are combined with a state of the art deploying mechanism and a high-quality mattress that will never let you down, sweet dreams guaranteed!

Once deployed, this designer sofa becomes a very comfortable bed so you can receive guests with style

High-end mattresses and slats, like these made in Italy will perform for years

Other ideas for multi-purpose furniture

Other kinds of furniture can transition from a decorative function such as a stylish trunk made in solid walnut wood to a library, bar and even a writing desk with private compartments.

This trunk in solid walnut can open to become either a bookcase or a bar and even an improvised desk with private storage. Notice the elegant wheels to make opening and closing as easy as possible.

Some multi-purpose furniture can be used in different ways at different stages of the life of your children. From baby to child, this furniture can serve different needs, without needing a new investment (and having to dispose of the obsolete furniture so that you don’t loose floor space).

From storing baby utensils to becoming useful storage later on, this baby changer has it all.

Always choose furniture that can serve multiple purposes and help you save space while having a tidy apartment

You can use the same table as a dining table or as a desk if you are really tight. A bench, besides for sitting,  can also be used as a coffee table or console. You can use stylish bins for archiving, filing documents, laundry, etc.

Always keep in mind that some furniture you will use for different purposes might need to be moved so it makes sense that you look for something light or with wheels, anything that makes moving the furniture easy and comfortable for you.

2) Furniture with storage

There are many items that can combine a decorative and furnishing function while also providing storage. The storage can be completely hidden (for example storing items under a table and covering the table with a mantelpiece that will touch the floor) or can also be visible (such as drawers under a bed that will allow you to take advantage of space that would be otherwise lost).

You will notice that this bench has storage space and the overhead hanging system has pegs, a rail and even a shelf.

The storage drawers under this bed can hold extra blankets and pillows so that your bedroom looks nice and tidy and with more space

This coffee table give an impression of lightness and lets the eye wander below and beyond the table, giving a better feeling of volume in the room. Using an elaborate opening mechanism, it can also serve as a small dining table and provides extra storage space too.

4) Use your walls to their full potential

Your walls are your best friends when it comes to decorating your interiors and saving space. Only your imagination will put limits to the many things that can be done with your walls so that they can both decorate your home while also helping you enjoy extra space on the floor. Do not “waste” your walls’ “prime real estate” and consider them as a major player in your interior decoration and home storage options.

Decorating walls with stunning panels can create a sensation of depth and increase the perception of volume within the room.

These wall panels will instantly decorate a room while instantly modifying the visual perception of the volume your apartment.

If you wish to create a more intimate atmosphere, you can use panels to separate two different areas (note that the partition should not be too wide so there is minimal impact on volume perception)

Combining decorative wall panels and mirrors can also make a small room appear larger.

Spice up your bedroom by decorating the wall behind the headboard, choose a pattern that can increase visual depth thus making the room appear bigger.

Other ideas for making the most of your walls so that your apartment seems bigger

You can hang furniture from your walls and achieve a very beautiful beautiful floating and weightless effect, it will save space on your floor and make the room seem bigger.

Notice how the separate lighting in the glass compartments also helps give a special atmosphere in the room at night, modern and spacious.

4) “Open” furniture to enhance visual range across the room

Use “leggy” and “hollow” furniture to give a better visual impression and open up the room. The space under a table top and between the legs of a console will definitely increase the sensation of space.

The outward curving legs leave a good view through the underneath of this small table towards the rest of the room and this will help the entire space look bigger.

5) Ergonomical furniture

Modern furniture is designed with small improvements that can help you avoid having other bigger and redundant items. For example, a cleverly located reading light can be enough so you do not need a bedside table lamp and cupboards with an integrated light can help you save space elsewhere.

interior decorating make small apartment look bigger - ergonomical furniture

Integrated lighting within furniture can help avoid redundant lighting elsewhere.

6) Think out of the box and look for creative furniture arrangements

Think out of the box, most people think of square or rectangular arrangements, you should try triangular  (using the corner of a room for example) and even circular layouts like for your sitting area. Be audacious and move your furniture around to create the perfect setting, even consider doing this every six months and you will see how positive it is for your mind and happiness.

kidney shape table

This table top and its curious kidney-shape not only is a very contemporary and elegant piece, it can help you create different layouts around it that are not the typical square or rectangular shape.

Round or oval tabletops can also be very useful for small apartment terraces compared to square or rectangular ones.

Mosaic table

A 90 cm diameter table can easily allow for two people having breakfast on a small apartment terrace.

7) Use sleek and visually light furniture

A contemporary Danish designer sofa will look much more lighter visually than a bulky vintage-looking sofa. This will enhance the sensation of space around it. Do not compromise with your comfort, be sure that the seating and back cushions are made with real feathers so that even though the shape of the sofa is thin and the design minimalist, you will enjoy it.

Danish design and real feathers, modern minimalist furniture can also be comfortable and elegant.

8) Modular furniture can also help you save space

A large square ottoman can be attached to your sofa to make a daybed and it can also be used as a coffee table when needed. Take advantage of the moving parts of a modular sofa set to compose different layouts depending on the situation.

9) Always use the available natural light as much as possible

Avoid placing objects against your windows so that natural light can pour into your home and this will make your space seem larger. Using light-coloured furniture will also help reflect the light better, improving the effect of visually increasing the space around you. Avoid using heavy curtains that will take up space along the walls during the day, this way you will let in even more light.

interior decorating make small apartment look bigger white furniture

Here white coloured furniture (buffet, coffee table and bench) as well as the white walls and rug magnify and enhance natural light, creating the impression of a bigger room.

10) Take advantage of your corners

Besides walls, corners are the most under-utilized spaces in homes. Be it storage, a computer station or just decorative shelves, you can make the most of corners using a space would otherwise neglect and at the same time have your home looking tidy and neat.

This corner, created by a Z-shaped wall-layout has been used to locate a storage furniture

11) Use sliding doors

These can help you separate different areas of your home without taking up much space (a conventional door needs space to open and close) and you can use them as decorative items too if you choose your panels carefully.

A conventional door, even when it is open, can obstruct the view from one room to another, making your apartment look smaller. A sliding door takes up minimal space and when open, allows a perfect view across rooms, enhancing the sensation of volume.

From traditional patterns to contemporary designs using a multitude of available materials, your imagination is the limit in making your doors a major decorative accessory.

Having a small apartment does not mean you need to squeeze everything in, decorate it using your creativity and a practicality!

By applying the tips above you will be able to save space while making your living environment more pleasant, for you, your family and friends.

Begin transforming your apartment into a cute, cosy and happy home today!

Recovery for European Union wooden furniture imports from Vietnam in 2014

Posted on by Imagine Vietnam / Posted in luxury-furniture, Uncategorized | Tagged , , , , , , | Leave a comment

Some recent figures published by the Timber network reflect that after a serious decline (-13%) in 2013, European Union (EU) wooden furniture imports from outside the region (non European Union countries of which most are Asian, China and Vietnam being major sources of furniture imports into the EU) have begun recovering in 2014 with a slow yet positive reversal of the previous trend. In the first six months of 2014, wooden furniture imports from non-EU countries into the EU have increased by 3% over the same period in 2013.

European Union Wooden furniture Imports from Vietnam 1

Wooden furniture made in Vietnam for export to the European Union in 2014

This recovery varies immensely depending on the type of products, the main winners being upholstered seats (+5%), dining/living room furniture (+6%) and bedroom furniture (+5%). The products that experienced a decline in imports were un-upholstered seats (-2%).

If we focus specifically on Vietnam and Vietnamese produced furniture, exports to the EU were up +6% for the first semester of 2014 (+5% in the case of Chinese manufactured wooden furniture) while Indonesia and Malaysia were on the loosing end of these statistics as their exports to the EU declined over the same period.

Some notable increases in the imports of wooden furniture per country for this first half of 2014 were reflected in countries like Spain (+14% to 70 million), the UK (+7% to €813 million), Germany (+1% to €452 million), Italy (+2% to €91 million), Sweden (+4% to €85 million) and Denmark (+4% to €83 million).

Furniture inspection report – Quality control before shipment of wicker (PVC rattan/resin) furniture from Vietnam

Posted on by Imagine Vietnam / Posted in luxury-furniture | Tagged , , , , , , , | Comments Off on Furniture inspection report – Quality control before shipment of wicker (PVC rattan/resin) furniture from Vietnam

Following the huge success of our previous article “the potential and pitfalls of importing furniture from Vietnam“, here is a new article we trust you will find interesting. Real experience, real furniture, real problems, this shipment could be yours :-)

We were commissioned by one of our partners (retailer in Finland) to carry out QC (quality control) on the order they had made to a new supplier of poly-rattan furniture (also called resin or pvc rattan/wicker furniture) in Vietnam.

Controlling and checking a full container (40 foot HC also called 40 foot high cube) can take a long time if done carefully and the simmering heat inside a factory with little or no ventilation at all can make it a real challenge.

Preparing a third-party inspection of furniture before shipment from Vietnam to Europe

Before the day of the inspection, several items need to be checked and preparations must be done.

This is the list of items we requested in an email to the factory producing the furniture order for our client:

“So that we can prepare accordingly, please do confirm and provide following information:

1) HS code of the products
2) Date when all the products are available for QC, they must also be packaged so I can check packaging (or be packaged right after the QC, within a reasonable laps of time). I will choose at least one complete set of each model (12 different models in this order), I must be able to pick each unit/item randomly.
3) Date when items will be loaded into the containers as I wish to be present from beginning to end of the loading.
4) Please send me a sample of your standard shipping marks for one of the models in the order, for example DL-S160-166
5) Please send me a copy of all assembly instructions when applicable (I see DL-D44-45 is K/D, perhaps you have instructions for this model)
6) All cushions (seat and backrest) as well as pillows and lumbar cushions of each model must be available at the time of the QC, I cannot validate QC if they are not available and correctly packaged with each item.
7) Address of the production site where the QC will be carried out.
8) Please confirm there will be a large and perfectly flat space (so we can see if the furniture is correctly balanced on the floor) available for us to test in good conditions.”

In theory the above items would seem easy to obtain….well not really. Here is the encouraging answer we received from the factory and our comments:

1/ HS Code: 9403 8100 90

==> this HS code provided by the factory is actually wrong and would lead to a 5,6% customs tax upon entering Europe! Just have a look here (useful resource when importing furniture into Europe: http://madb.europa.eu/madb/tariffLibDetailPubli.htm?langId=EN&datacat_id=AT&countryid=&submit=Search&countries=VN&hscode=9403810090). After double-checking with our client’s customs agent, here is there answer:

“You were right about the HS codes; dining sets; 94.03.70.00.90 and sofa
sets; 94.01.80.00.00. Like you said the code given by DL means bambu and
rattan, not polyrattan. With the codes above ther will be no tax.”

It is quite surprising that the own producer of the goods would not know the right HS code for their products, this mistake almost cost our client 5,6% in EU import tax.

2/ QC: 25-03-2015. Another thing one item will be moving to lab for testing. It need 1 week for doing it at lab.

==> No lab testing was required, this seems to be a lame excuse for delaying that product for a week. Few suppliers would carry out lab testing if not required and would definitely ask for the bill to be paid by the client (no bill so we presume no tests either, neither was there a lab certificate).

3/ Date of loading container: 26-03-2015

After confirming and re-confirming, this date was pushed back (late on the eve of the agreed date, Sunday night) to the 27-03-2015, this can have big implications if you are in a hurry and expected to load the container on a departing the next day. You might then have to wait 3-5 days before your container can depart with the same shipping line, loosing a week in the process and making your clients in Europe or elsewhere irate.

4/ Please see attach file for shipping mark.

Furniture Quality Control in Vietnam - Shipping marks supplier

Basic information on Shipping Marks, not necessarily useful to the furniture buyer who would certainly prefer package X out of Y packages, etc..

==> we pointed out that those shipping marks did not carry the information requested by our client

5/ KD It is easy for assembly with screw together.

==> OK, we’ll have to take their word for it…

6/ Note it.

7/ QC at factory in Dong Nai province, We will send instruction to you before date QC.

8/ Note it.

Furniture Quality Control in Vietnam - Lack of flat space in factory

Uneven flooring at the factory will make it very challenging to test stability in an adequate manner

==> There was no adequate flat space in the factory on the day of our visit (this is a reality in almost every factory, the best you can get as was the case here, a large sheet of glass to put the furniture on and check stability…)

Unparallel lines in weaving

This was a common concern across many models.

Marks on metal caps of armchair legs  Furniture Quality Control in Vietnam - Dirty metal hardware The identified caps were replaced by clean ones
Un-balanced tables due to uneven plastic stoppers  Furniture Quality Control in Vietnam - Uneven rubber stopper The stoppers were adjusted so that the tables and armchairs were balanced

Metal components with gaps  Furniture Quality Control in Vietnam - Welding metal components issue

Furniture Quality Control in Vietnam - Spare metal components

The ones with the most visible gaps were removed and replaced by better ones

When measuring each model, dimensions were not always respected (but within the 5% tolerance they consider acceptable)  Furniture Quality Control in Vietnam - Dimensions concerns In the most flagrant case, a table measured 190 cm long instead of 200 cm, we called Marko and got his approval. Other variations were not really significant and did not affect either the appearance (design) or the comfort of the furniture.
Glass table tops not fitting adequately into the table frame  Furniture Quality Control in Vietnam - Tempered glass not fitting into table frame By tightening the screws of the frame, the gaps were reduced to an acceptable level
Blunt or bent plastic stoppers on chair legs  Furniture Quality Control in Vietnam - Uneven rubber stopper 2 Replacement of the most damaged ones, others did not affect stability of the item
Weaving was bent and deformed due to excessive heating  Furniture Quality Control in Vietnam - Wicker melted due to excess heat

The entire corner was extracted and done again on this item with new wicker

Shipping marks did not carry all the details you requested originally  Furniture Quality Control in Vietnam - Shipping marks with insufficient information After calling and consulting with you, we approved to continue with the supplier’s shipping marks
Layer of painting on frame was chipped  Furniture Quality Control in Vietnam - Epoxy painting chipped off metal frame

Furniture Quality Control in Vietnam - Epoxy painting chipped off metal frame 2

We requested a new coat of painting to be applied and then to remove paint stains on the wicker

Furniture Quality Control in Vietnam - Epoxy painting chipped off metal frame 3

Hardware was not of good quality  Furniture Quality Control in Vietnam - Bad quality metal hardware See below, in some cases we had to replace the component entirely
Metal hardware component broke during our testing due to being of thin low grade metal  Furniture Quality Control in Vietnam - Bad quality metal hardware 2  Furniture Quality Control in Vietnam - Bad quality metal hardware 3

New components were welded together to replace the low quality ones. Less appealing visually (but hidden in the frame under the weaving) they are much more resistant.

The junction system on this component was stuck in an inoperable position  Furniture Quality Control in Vietnam - Bad quality plastic hardware With tools, we extracted the faulty part and replaced it

After this day of QC, the feedback we gave to our client was good in the sense that the factory was good at what they knew which is weaving. The main issues came from the metal components, rubber stoppers, etc. and this is a recurrent problem for any shipment of this kind. If you are not present before loading, all of the above issues would appear once the goods were unpack-aged in Europe, too late to do much about it. Carrying a QC (quality control) of this kind can save you from a lot of frustrations and even from loosing money if you cannot fix the issues once you have received the goods at destination.

How to create a relaxing atmosphere by decorating your home using Feng Shui

Posted on by Imagine Vietnam / Posted in Uncategorized | Tagged , , , , , | Leave a comment

Eastern traditions offer a lot of inspiration for designers, and one of the oldest approaches to interior design from is Feng Shui. This method places an emphasis on creating positive energies, known as chi, in a room through a balance placement of everything within the space.

While Feng Shui is considered to originate in China, it has spread to the West from places like Vietnam, where it’s even known to be used to map out entire cities, such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City! Whether you are hoping to improve your luck or just wish to find a different way to look at an interior area, Feng Shui offers a good starting point for any design effort.

Open Spaces, the best way to keep positive energy flowing in your home

Feng Shui tips for your home: open spaces are essential to keep positive energy flowing

Feng Shui tips for your home: open spaces are essential to keep positive energy flowing

The foremost principle of Feng Shui is that the energy in a room needs to be able to flow through it. In a more Western view of things, this is similar to the approach that we see among interior designers who subscribe to the modernist school of aesthetics. In fact, early 20th Century modernist movements in architecture were inspired by the Asian house as an ideal model for design. Open space not only promotes good chi within a room, but it creates a sense of luxury.

Placing the Sofa in the best position according to Feng Shui

Feng Shui principles hold that a visitor should not risk running into any furniture on the way into a room. In order to allow energy to flow within a home, sofas should be placed along a solid wall at the farthest point from the entry to a room. If a solid wall cannot be found within a room, some type of divider or backing should be placed behind the sofa to help contain energies near it.

Shapes of your furniture that maximize Feng Shui positive effects

Feng Shui ideas to decorate your home in Vietnam: Ideal shapes for your furniture

While the circle holds the greatest sway within the philosophy of Feng Shui, designers should pay attention to a variety of different shapes. A circular coffee table is often good for a room, but a space should also have square, rectangular and triangular elements and the items of the same variety of spaces within it. Each shape represents a traditional element of the universe: squares equate with earth; rectangles invoke wood; triangles represent fire; and ovals and circles mean metal.

Points and Seating

Feng Shui ideas to decorate your home in Vietnam: Avoid having blunt or pointy edges facing towards you and your guests

One intriguing principle of Feng Shui is the insistence that no one should be seated in front of the point of a piece of furniture. This is why, when in doubt, most Feng Shui masters prefer seating to be arranged around a circular table. Square tables are OK, but make sure that any seats that might be off to the side are not lined up with a point.

Mirrors and Feng Shui

Feng Shui ideas to decorate your home in Vietnam: Using mirrors to maximize sensation of space

Feng Shui aims to promote a sense of abundance and luxury, and designers who employ the philosophy love to utilize one or two big mirrors within a room. A mirror should not be dressed in an overly ornate manner. If possible, a mirror should be placed near a natural light source in order to spread abundance throughout the room. In small apartments as you may find in big cities like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, a mirror has multiple advantages and can also create the impression of larger spaces.

Architects and interior decorators in Vietnam are increasingly resorting to Feng Shui principles when they plan the layout and furniture of their clients’ homes. Using creative storage spaces so as to keep the living area open is another important point worthy of mention, see our article about “interior decorating tips to make your house or apartment look bigger

Buy furniture from Vietnam: potential and pitfalls when importing furniture from Asia

Posted on by Imagine Vietnam / Posted in luxury-furniture | Tagged , , , , , , | 25 Comments

Furniture business opportunities in Vietnam are enormous and can lead to a definitive competitive edge and increased margins for those that manage to benefit from the huge potential of the furniture industry.

Many different kinds of businesses in Europe and around the world are seeking to buy furniture from Vietnam and other Asian countries (mostly China but also Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, etc.). These businesses can be very varied and include architects, hotel and restaurant owners, furniture wholesalers, small and medium furniture retailers, interior decorators and many more. Vietnam has emerged as a major furniture producer in Asia and exports of Vietnamese produced furniture increase every year. Purchasing furniture in Vietnam can be easy and the key to a successful business in your home country. buy designer furniture from Vietnam The ever increasing flow of furniture exported from Vietnam and exported to countries around the world reflects the huge potential of the Vietnamese furniture industry.

Potential of importing furniture from Vietnam for all kinds of businesses

We focus on the luxury and high-end furniture segment. Many would think that purchasing this kind of furniture is near to impossible as the main thoughts that come to mind when referring to importing furniture from Asia is low-quality products and components, cheap-priced, often copied designs with total disregard to intellectual property and mass production without attention to details.

If you have time and resources to endure a very steep learning curve (see the pitfalls we describe below), there is a huge potential for improving your sourcing and margins by importing from Asia. You will find that the most famous luxury brands, from clothing and accessories (leather bags, suitcases) to electronic devices, all produce in Asia, mainly in China but also in neighboring countries like Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. Most consumers don’t even realize this which is already a testament to the success luxury brands have had with this cost-effective strategy. Most of these international brands don’t have their own production facilities but rather sub-contract the production to a panel of local suppliers that can deliver the quality standards that are required from them.

In the footwear or textile industry, it is not unusual to observe one subcontractor or factory with different production lines, each allocated for a specific international brand. As part of our own learning curve and while we seek the best quality, we have learned, in the furniture industry, that it is much better to work directly with a furniture producer that is already recognized internationally for the quality of the furniture produced. These often have their own brand which is sold at high-street retailers around the world. Knowing that you are purchasing a luxury sofa from a producer that is selling the same sofas to luxury furniture retailers in Europe is a guarantee that you will receive the same quality that is being acclaimed by western consumers.

Most of these exclusive producers do not have time or the will to deal with small buyers so this is where we can provide a very useful service since we have partnerships in place with Danish, Italian and English furniture producers who are located in Vietnam (many were producing before in Europe but have relocated to Asia). Being able to access high-end furniture factories, purchase at wholesale prices and mix different items made by different producers into one container opens a whole world of possibilities whatever your project may be (hotel, restaurants, interior decoration, retailing, etc.).

Pitfalls to avoid when importing furniture from Vietnam and across Asia

However there are many pitfalls and every day, many buyers are disappointed by what promised to be a great transaction and that turned out to be a nightmare with dire financial consequences. It is essential to have a network of trusted and dependable furniture producers whose factories and capabilities you have tried and proved through a solid and durable relationship. Trying to make a quick transaction by purchasing furniture from a furniture factory that you hardly know because you are tempted by the incredibly low prices is the first step to having an unsuccessful transaction.

Quality issues when purchasing furniture from Vietnam

Quality issues are a recurrent and daunting problem for most inexperienced furniture buyers in Vietnam. Being unable to have somebody you can trust to inspect your order before shipment will frequently lead to receiving a container at your home port or warehouse that will despair you when you see what furniture you have just imported from Vietnam.

To successfully import furniture from Vietnam (o elsewhere in Asia), it is mandatory to be able to perform quality controls, not only before shipment of the goods but during the production of these goods so you can detect defects and other production issues as they appear.

Many buyers have had a bad surprise, not on the first container received by a supplier but later on in the relationship, after having received several containers, suddenly one arrives and the quality is no longer there. Many reasons can take an Asian furniture producer to do this, almost all of them beyond your control, the only way to protect and ensure success for your operations is to monitor extensively each and every shipment, during production and before packaging.

Quality issues can be apparent and easily detected if you have the means to carry out an inspection (QC or quality control) before  the packing of the furniture. Some other issues only appear later on, after the furniture has been delivered to your clients, sometimes a long time after. To avoid this, a thorough knowledge and control of the components and the processes used to produce the furniture you are importing are essential. Other quality issues need to be detected and prevented during the production of certain types of furniture (for example a faulty powder coating process) because they will not be apparent if you only carry out one QC, just before packaging.

Knowing your products and your supplier  over a span of several years also enables you to find permanent solutions to problems that arise only after a furniture item has been used for several months or years (i.e., structural defects, etc.).

Here are just a few examples of different kinds of problems you may encounter when purchasing and importing furniture from Vietnam and Asia:

Tooling and assembly issue when buying furniture from Asia (Vietnam)

A screw that is too short to allow proper assembly. Apparently a small problem, it can lead to customer dissatisfaction and extra costs.

Quality control issues when importing furniture from Asia (Vietnam)

Iron will rust very quickly if the powder coating and epoxy treatment is not well applied. Impossible to detect beforehand, the only solution is to supervise the anti-rust operations while in progress.

Quality control issues when purchasing furniture from Asia (Vietnam)

This problem only became apparent many months after delivery. Production methods had to be changed to avoid this situation.

Tooling and assembly issue when importing furniture from Asia (Vietnam)

Missing or bad dimensions of the screws, nuts or bolts…you will need to have a backup solution to solve this problem…extra hardware.

Packaging quality and packing furniture for import from Vietnam

Packaging and packing furniture for export is another essential dimension for the success of your purchase of furniture in Vietnam or in Asia. Depending on your logistics flow, packaging will have to be adapted to ensure that there is no damage to your furniture, either inside the container during sea transportation or later on, upon arrival at the port of destination or during the distribution process by truck to your warehouse or to your customer’s location.

packaging issues when importing furniture from Vietnam

This is definitely what you don’t wish to see when opening the package of furniture you have imported from Vietnam: bad packing (some parts inside the carton were assembled when they shouldn’t have been) and low quality carton leads to irreparable damages and your supplier won’t refund you in this situation.

Most furniture factories include in the furniture’s price what is called “export quality packaging”, do not take any risks with that because this packaging is insufficient and flimsy, if you want to guarantee that your furniture arrives in pristine condition, you will need specific and technical packaging (honeycomb cardboard and hard rulers for the edges). Loading the furniture into the container is another source of damages since consolidation platforms involve workers who do not belong to the furniture factories, their main target being to squeeze all the boxes into a container as quickly as possible, no need for them to worry about anything breaking… When importing luxury furniture from Vietnam, each item that might be damaged might represent several thousand dollars of loss. Here are some more photos illustrating different situations you might encounter and that are caused either by inadequate packaging or careless container loading (stuffing).

insufficient packaging for export

Low grade packaging will not resist any kind of friction during transport, this is a typical result that will lead to a string of claims to suppliers and insurers, generally to no avail.

bad packing for import from Vietnam

This is a typical loading problem. This item was stuffed into the container and the aluminum frame could not resist the pressure during transport leading to bent furniture.

Packaging and container loading issues when importing furniture from Asia (Vietnam)

Stacking furniture within a container can cause these damages due to the weight and inadequate packaging for export.

packaging and transport issues when importing furniture from Asia (Vietnam)

If you are transporting fragile furniture and also trucking it to your client’s doorstep, packaging that might be sufficient for container transport will not be suitable for handling at your warehouse and transporting by truck later on for mail order deliveries.

Packaging and container loading issues when purchasing furniture from Asia (Vietnam)

An extreme example of what can go wrong when furniture is tightly packed within a container: bent aluminum frame, beyond repair.

packaging issues when importing furniture from Vietnam 2

Another classic, insufficient packaging for container transport and the ensuing delivery by truck.

Robust and technical packaging can be a significant addition to your import cost breakdown (can reach 7-12% of the value of a product) however, it can provide protection against having to discard the damages to the furniture are discovered when it is unpacked at your warehouse or even worse (because of higher removal and disposal costs), at your clients’ homes.

Packaging for furniture export Vietnam

Ideal packaging. Luxury furniture deserves luxury packaging, a sensible (albeit expensive) precaution due to risks of damage while importing.

Special packaging that will resist any damage during transport from Vietnam to your country.

How to purchase high-end furniture and import it from Vietnam

Without having the capability of traveling to Vietnam to buy furniture, not only once to meet the furniture producers and visit their factories but on a frequent basis depending on your purchasing schedule, the furniture exported from Vietnam by some suppliers will disappoint you, even though you did your due diligence and made the trip to Asia to prepare your panel of furniture sellers and furniture producers.

Lifestyle Fair Vietnam 2014 – Furniture and accessories for home and contract projects

Posted on by Imagine Vietnam / Posted in designer-furniture | Tagged , , , , | Leave a comment

Lifestyle Fair Vietnam 2014 – Furniture and accessories for home and contract projects

The Lifestyle Fair Vietnam 2014 is still on today, 21st of April 2014 , if you are in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam, hop on over to have a look at the home accessories and other decorative items on display. Besides home accessories, there is a sizable amount of furniture items on display such as sofas, beds, cupboards, tables and chairs.

This is the fourth year that this Fair is running thanks to The Vietnam Gift and Housewares Association (Vietcraft) and the Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency (Vietrade). Touted as the one of the most impressive Home decor, Gift and Housewares fairs in Southeast Asia, “LifeStyle Vietnam 2014”, is definitely worth visiting if you are working with contract projects or retailing home accessories. You will find (at least according to the organizers advertisements), 1.000 booths and over 400 exhibitors. I doubt that is the real number of booths or exhibitors but the variety of products and the enthusiasm of the exhibitors in building new partnerships with overseas buyers is definitely worth a visit.

In this occasion, we met some very friendly exhibitors coming from Indonesia, actually there is a series of stalls that are showing furniture and handicrafts made by Indonesian furniture producers. Actually, this Furniture Fair is much more relaxed than the VIFA fair that took place last month in District 7 (Phu My Hung) and exhibitors are really more laid back.

One of many reasons to come to this fair is to visit accessories and home decoration dealers and producers such as lacquer ware, pottery, ceramics, woven products (rattan, water hycacinth), etc. These have some very interesting products that can be used for decorating and furnishing hotels, apartment buildings, resorts and any other contract furniture project requiring nicely crafted and practical items. The lacquer and other objects will give life to the interior decorators’ vision of a specific atmosphere or ambiance.

Located in the same location as previous years, near the airport:

Tan Binh Exhibition and Convention Center

446 Hoang Van Thu Street
Tan Binh District
Ho Chi Minh City – Vietnam

Opening times are:

Fri 18 Apr 2014 : 09.00-18.00
Sat 19 Apr 2014 : 09.00-18.00
Sun 20 Apr 2014 : 09.00-18.00
Mon 21 Apr 2014 : 09.00-17.00

For those of us in the industry, not many novelties compared to previous years though you can see that some furniture producers are following current trends in furniture design and appearance such as the poly rattan furniture now using some very thick and round wicker which has become popular recently.

Here are some photos of products you can see at the Lifestyle Fair 2014:

Vietnamese march to protest China’s action in Vietnam’s EEZ gets out of hand and factories are burnt

Posted on by Giang Bui / Posted in Uncategorized | Tagged , , | 1 Comment

20/05/2014: Update on casualties, please scroll down to read

To protest over the placement of a Chinese oil drilling rig in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Vietnam, many Vietnamese in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and in other provinces demonstrated and called for China to take their rig out of the EEZ. People tried to do many things with the hope that they could put pressure on China. Some hotels are refusing Chinese guests and trips to China are canceled to protest China’s action. (http://www.voanews.com/content/emotions-running-high-in-vietnam-over-china-dispute/1913633.html).

At the same time, some Vietnamese web hosting companies have been under attack by Chinese hackers and several websites belonging to small business or private persons have been wiped out.

Many workers in Binh Duong and Dong Nai province, Vietnam’s industrial hub that accounts for an overwhelming part of national GDP, took part in what began as a peaceful protest which focused on voicing discontent towards Chinese and Taiwanese company. However, some agitators took advantage of the protest and brought tempers to a high so that many workers ended up overrunning and burning several textile and furniture factories. Led by these agitators, workers burnt and damaged the facilities and property of some factories, in some cases indiscriminately or even targeting Singaporean factories by mistake.

It seems that no furniture factories were burnt but rather textile and other industry related factories.

Here are some pictures showing the ruins of some factories after the protest:

After the fire, many looters came to scavenge the metal parts strewn about.

Textile and furniture factories under siege in Vietnam following protests about Chinese non-respect of Vietnam’s EEZ

According to Furnituretoday (http://www.furnituretoday.com/article/488105-protests-cause-shutdowns-some-vietnamese-furniture-plants), due to the protest, some factories in Binh Duong and Dong Nai province have sent their workers home early. Also according to Furniture today, some sources in the furniture industry declined to comment on the impact of the protests to furniture shipments. However, some furniture factories have already warned that there will be potential disruptions to furniture deliveries. The main targets seem to be Chinese furniture producers but indiscriminate actions have also targeted Taiwanese furniture producers and Korean furniture factories.

People do not know how long the situation will last but they hope the government will step in. Most surely, the government will take quick action and there will not dramatic effect to the furniture industry.

20/05/2014 Update:

After the government and local authorities of some provinces such as Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Ha Tinh or Ho Chi Minh City stepped in, the situation became better. Thousands of workers at VSIP (Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Park) in Binh Duong or workers at AMATA Industrial Zone in Dong Nai province came back to work on 19/5. Workers cleaned up the factory and began doing their usual manufacturing tasks. The Ministry of Finance has committed to support factories that have been damaged in the strikes. Many Taiwanese and Singaporean owners of factories in Dong Nai and Binh Duong province said that they were very pleased with what the government and the provincial authorities had done to control the situation.

As in Binh Duong and Dong Nai province, thousands of workers and contractors at Formosa Plastic Group in Vung Ang EZ, Ha Tinh province also came back to work after the riot on May 14th.(http://www.vir.com.vn/news/en/coverage/factories-in-vung-ang-vsip-get-back-to-work.html). According to ABC news (http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-05-15/an-chinese-worker-killed-in-anti-beijing-protest-in-vietnam/5455762), at the riot in Vung Ang EZ, one Chinese worker has been killed due to smoke inhalation in one of the factory fires and at least 90 people have been injured. Please note that depending on the source, the number of casualties can vary. However, now the situation has come back to it normalcy. The authorities of Ha Tinh committed to ensure the safety of all workers and the assets of Formosa.

VIFA Furniture 2015 fair in Vietnam | Vietnam International Furniture & Home Accessories Fair 2015

Posted on by Imagine Vietnam / Posted in designer-furniture | Tagged , , , , , , | Leave a comment

UPDATE: Click here for VIFA 2016 Vietnam International Furniture Fair 2016

Many buyers and other furniture professionals will be flying into Vietnam next month to visit the VIFA furniture fair.

With current dollar / euro exchange rates, most definitely there is less of a competitive advantage for Vietnam furniture producers in regards to European furniture factories (South and Eastern-Europe) but let’s hope that overall attractiveness for furniture made in Vietnam continues to grow.

After discussing with some factory owners the cost of exhibiting within the Saigon Exhibition & Convention Center (SECC), it is not a surprise that some have elected to set-up a showroom and exhibition space around 500 meters from the official location. We visited the “adjacent” space of our friend Michael, whose factory mainly exports to the German market.

You will see below some photos from that visit.

The VIFA furniture fair will be running from the 11th to the 14th of March 2015.

UPDATE: Click here for VIFA 2016 Vietnam International Furniture Fair 2016

Many buyers and other furniture professionals will be flying into Vietnam next month to visit the VIFA furniture fair.

This is a great opportunity for factories to showcase their talent and promote their goods to the eyes of international furniture retailers, wholesalers and all other types of industry professionals.

You may also meet furniture designers that are looking for a factory to produce the designs they have created and that only exist at that point as a 3D drawing of a furniture item.

Interior decorators, architects and contract furniture professionals will attend in the hopes of finding new sources of supply for their projects and of course, to switch their sourcing from other countries like China that have lost competitiveness in terms of pricing to purchasing furniture in Vietnam.

You will also find some logistics companies since this service is essential to anyone looking to import furniture from Vietnam, wherever the port of destination may be (i.e.: Japan, Europe, U.S.A., Gulf Coast, etc.).

The VIFA furniture fair will be running from the 11th to the 14th of March 2014.

Enjoy your visit to Vietnam’s furniture fair this March 2014!

Update, 25/3/2014

The show is over for 2014, honestly, not a very stimulating show. Despite the usual furniture producers, not really many changes from last year, perhaps even less exhibitors. You could walk through in 30 minutes which is quite astounding given the size of the displays and the amount of exhibitors at other furniture fairs in the region (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, etc.), without mentioning of course China and it multiple numerous giant furniture fairs.

Here are some photos we took while visiting: http://graspread.com/

Posted on by Imagine Vietnam / Posted in luxury-furniture | Tagged , , | 2 Comments

European Heritage Collection, where classic designs and true luxury blend in perfect harmony

Looking at Tradition to Design Future living

It is an honor to present the European Heritage Collection, a collection of truly unique and exclusive furniture that has been imagined, designed and produced under the direct supervision of an Italian “Maestro”.

Produced in a state of the art factory in Binh Duong, Vietnam while using techniques that comply with the strict rules that govern the production of classical furniture according to the “rule of art” (“a regola d’arte”, in Italian), rules which have not changed since the Middle Ages.

Our European Heritage Collection brings together extraordinary furniture items belonging to different periods of the history of the “Old World” or “Old Continent” such as the incredible French furniture and the particular furniture styles of the Louis XIV Louis 14th, Louis XV Louis 15th or Louis XVI (Louis 16th ) periods as well as French furniture inspired by the “Empire” period under the reign of Napoleon. English historical periods are also represented with some items inspired by the famous Chippendale style.

Never before was it possible to purchase in Vietnam such truly luxurious and perfect antique furniture reproductions such as those belonging to our classical European Heritage Collection. Until now, all the furniture produced by this Italian luxury classical furniture producer was reserved for export to the most distinguished retailers around the world, from the United States to the Arab Emirates.

Absolute luxury in the form of classical European furniture is now available online in Vietnam and neighboring countries (Thailand, Laos and Cambodia).

French furniture became famous under different periods of French history, ranging from the French Regency (“Régence”) to the above-mentioned Louis 14, Louis 15 and Louis 16 periods or the later “Empire” period resulting from the Napoleonic campaigns in Africa.

Through our partnership with an Italian furniture producer, with a factory in the outskirts of Saigon / Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) that is specialized in producing high-end and luxury historical European classical furniture reproductions.

Upon visiting our collection, you will be thrilled by the exquisite blend of elegant and refined shapes, museum-worthy finishing’s, magnificent handmade carvings, and unbelievably delicate brass accents of the finest quality made according to the strict standards of “A Regola d’Arte” an Italian expression synonymous of masterwork.

All furniture items, from French, Italian and English periods and, generally speaking, of European Heritage, are inspired from the finest French, Italian and English craftsmanship traditions of the XVIII (18th) and XIX (19th) century, achieving a perfect balance between the time-proven demanding standards needed to produce masterpieces of this kind, with a slight touch of more modern aesthetic trends to suit the contemporary lifestyle of our discerning customers in Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia or Laos.

Classical masterpieces produced under the direct supervision of an Italian “Maestro” in strict compliance with “A Regola d’Arte” standards

Each masterpiece is made according to the demanding standards of “A Regola D’Arte” while under the direct supervision of a true Italian master craftsman. In addition to his hands-on experience in producing traditional European furniture, he has acquired a deep understanding of the different trends across different periods encompassing an extensive “History of European Furniture” he has acquired an extensive knowledge of all periods, styles and their detailed characteristics in the History of European Furniture.

Our expert’s experience with furniture spans over more than 45 years and includes trading and appraising antiques, restoring antique furniture as well as designing and crafting luxury classical furniture. His incomparable career and in-depth understanding of classical styles acquired over these years of personal experience and learning from masters of the past century have given him a thorough understanding of the different techniques applied by his predecessors. It is in now way an exaggeration to affirm that he can manufacture furniture fit for kings and nobility.

Timeless masterpieces produced applying ancient techniques and respecting the strictest standards required of true luxury furniture

Our entire collection of European heritage furniture (Classical English, Italian and French furniture styles) has been produced in a factory where machines are rarely used, skill and hands being the main components. Vietnam’s most famous furniture designer: Quasar Khanh

Posted on by Imagine Vietnam / Posted in designer-furniture | Tagged , , , , | 8 Comments

Quasar Khanh, a designer from another galaxy

The pseudonym (pen name) « Quasar » refers to a « star that shines from millions of light years from us » and reflects perfectly the gap between his creative talent and the era he lived in. This Vietnamese engineer, inventor and designer had talent and inspiration that was unparalleled at the time his genius flourished at the end of the 1960’s.

Quasar Khanh   A true visionary, he never doubted when his creative impulses were out of the frame of the established norms and theories of his time. He was often referred to as a “mad scientist” and frequently perceived by the scientific community as free electron that bothered more than a few scholars of his time. In the world of design, he turned the tables and redefined industrial and product design in the 60’s with his audacity and extravagance.Quasar Khanh id

Philippe Starck actually worked for Quasar Khanh when he made his first steps in the world of design. At the time, Quasar Khanh had launched his collection of inflatable furniture. Philippe Starck wrote a very emotional tribute to Quasar Khanh which will be published soon in a biography of this exceptional figure. He clearly refers to Quasar as being a master, light years from his peers, while Starck could only watch, breathless, from below. Jacques Séguela one of France’s most famous copywriters, has also written a very touching tribute to Quasar Khan (click here to read it in French on his official website).

Quasar Khanh, a designer that symbolises the pop culture of the end of the 60’s and is one of its most iconic figures.

Quasar Khanh was born in 1934, in Hanoi, Vietnam. His birth name was Nguyen Manh Khanh. It is only when he married the French fashion designer Emmanuelle in 1957 that he adopted his pseudonym Quasar.

The end of the sixties was his most successful years in terms of notoriety as his creative spirit peaked. One of his most notable creations was his range of inflatable furniture “Aerospace”, whose original pieces are being exchanged and bought by knowledgeable collectors today. Despite health issues, in 2012, this insatiable inventor was still developing and registering innovatory and audacious patents from his home in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam at the age of 78.

His prolific mind’s curiosity spanned many diverse domains, from ships, to planes, architecture, cars, furniture design and many others.

Quasar Khanh studied in Paris where he graduated with an engineering degree at the most prestigious academy at the time (Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées) in 1959. Quasar always balanced his academic skills as an engineer with his creative talent as a designer, both of these assets rocketed forward by his spirit of inventing new solutions to old problems. He is recognized by his peers as being simultaneously an engineer, an inventor and a designer.

During his career as an engineer que worked at the Société Générale d’Entreprises, the biggest civil engineering company of the time before he became part of the presitigious engineering consulting firm Coyne and Bellier.
While he was working on the project of building the biggest multiple arch dam in the world at the time, under construction in Canada, the Manicouagan 5, he was faced with a considerable problem: mercury and lead were predominant in the construction materials. As he sought an alternative for these toxic materials as well as the pressure they implied, the idea of using compressed air began to take form in his mind, this idea was applied later to his inflatable furniture range.

Using compressed air in this civil engineering project, two inherent properties of this element become very apparent to Quasar, the strength and the transparency. Thanks to his unconventional approach, air becomes a building material and he will become passionate about seeking new ways to use this element. Quasar Khanh will develop in 1967 the first complete range of inflatable furniture. The « Aerospace collection » will be the result of his passion and will mark a revolution in the world of design at the end of the sixties.

Quasar Khanh, a pioneer in the creation of inflatable furniture who revolutionized the 1960’s

The « Aerospace collection » will become an icon of the pop culture at the end of the sixties et will be exhibited in 1969 at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs of Paris and the Triennale de Milan.

The emblematic « Aerospace Collection » became one of the milestones of furniture design was exhibited in museums around the world and can still be found at the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris) and the MoMa ( The Museum of Modern Art, New York

An inexhaustible genius, Quasar Khanh created inflatable living spaces

The expo « Inflatable Structures » was presented at the Museum of Moder Arts of Paris in 1968. The organizers aimed to exhibit all aspects of this concept : the technical inventions, practical applications and artistical expressions. The editors of the magazine Utopie were the instigators of this expo and they predicated a future which would be underlined by revolutionnary advances in architecture, urban planning and public transportation.

All exhibits were revolutionary inventions having inflatable structures as their common denominator. Quasar Khanh was of course, a central attraction within this expo.

Quasar Khanh, a prolific inventor, light years from his contemporaries

Quasar Khanh created a transparent cubic urban vehicle, the Quasar Unipower (also known as the « Cube Car » or the «Quasarmobile»). 13 units were produced in the United Kingdom between 1967 and 1968. The unusual shape of this motorized cube seduced medias and film directors of that period as they realized its potential as a marketing and promotional asset.

The French magazine “Elle” used it while carrying out surveys across the country in 1970 and it also appeared in various movies such as « Elle boit pas, elle fume pas, elle drague » with Mireille Darc behind the wheel. Other French personalities were seen in movies or magazines steering this unusual vehicle : Marlène Jobert, Sim, Bertrand Blier, Didier Haudepin et Corinne Le Poulain.

The huge advance this creation had over its time had a sweet and sour effect for the admirers of this brilliant inventor. Despite its success in the world of movies and fashion at the time, it arrived to early to be the object of a solid commercial launching so it was condemned to remain forever the mythical invention of an eccentric creator.

Quasar Khanh, the inventor of the bamboo bicycle?

It is uncertain to affirm that he created the first bamboo bicycle ever but when Quasar Khanh was putting his mind to the task of creating a new method of urban transprot that would be in harmony with nature, he assembled a bicycle made of bamboo, called the “bambouclette”.

bambouclette, bamboo bicycle by Quasar Khanh

Though many perceived this idea as frivolous, we can now affirm, in 2013, that using bamboo to produce high-performance bicycles with, in some aspects, better results than carbon-fiber bicycles, is now a reality.

Quasar and Emmanuelle Khanh, a couple whose artistic legacy continues to inspire in modern times

Quasar Khanh and his wife, Emmanuelle Khanh (model, fashion designer and creator of the glasses that carry her name today) were a couple where creativity and artistic audacity were permanent ingredients of their everyday life.

The famous “Emmanuelle Khanh” glasses are timeless and are worn by stars in show-business as well as on catwalks around the world.

Quasar Khanh, an inexhaustible genius born in Vietnam

Despite two brain haemorrhages, Quasar Khanh, engineer, inventor and designer that some even described as Einstein’s rival, is a resilient character and was still registering patents in 2012, at the age of 78.

Thank you Quasar from all of us that you continue to delight to this day with your unbridled genius.

READ NOW: Online Scams Targeting Furniture Industry Professionals

Posted on by Imagine Vietnam / Posted in Uncategorized | Tagged , , , , , | Leave a comment

Many of the scam attempts we receive regularly are not exclusively targeting furniture professionals in Vietnam but are most probably going around the whole world. We would like to share our experience hoping it will be useful to others. Your comments and experiences in this matter would be a great contribution to make this post as useful as possible for our furniture industry colleagues.

As we have all learnt over the years, online scams, hoaxes and other strategies to get unsuspecting people to pay out money or give out personal details are a common phenomenon. There is quite a bit of literature out there to inform potential targets if they are willing or knowledgeable enough to search for it. However, seeing the increase of suspicious emails that we receive regarding our furniture business, we thought it would be interesting to compile some examples of specific ploys targeting honest and unsuspecting furniture business owners (furniture producers, furniture retailers and traders, etc.).

Hopefully other colleagues in the industry can help us compile an even more comprehensive list of scams targeting furniture professionals around the world.

We will begin this compilation by the most common form of scams, those coming into our inbox on a regular basis but if you are interested in newer scams we are detecting via social networks such as Linkedin, please scroll down to reach this data directly.

1) Internet scams targeting furniture industry professionals: Phishing scams

Impossible not to begin our review with this very common and hugely successful scamming technique. It is called “phishing” to remind us of fishing, meaning that these emails are sent to hundreds of thousands of people with scammers counting on the fact that there will always be some, even if it is a small percentage, that will bite the bait (hence the idea of “fishing”). The “P” in “phising” is there on purpose as most of these scams originated (and are still being massively launched from) in Nigeria and by reading these emails, you would find a huge number of blatant spelling mistakes. This technique is called “Nigerian scams” but also “419 scams” (The number “419” refers to the article of the Nigerian Criminal Code dealing with fraud, read more here). This does not seem to be enough anymore to distinguish a professional email from a scam email. Today, these emails are becoming more focused and industry specific, and the spelling mistakes tend to disappear so it can be more difficult to identify the true nature of a furniture buying request email.

It is quite unfortunate for the real and sincere furniture buyers in countries like Nigeria, Ghana, etc. but honestly, the risk is quite big of wasting your time submitting furniture prices or quotations (the best case scenario) or even worse, loosing money if you get dragged into the scam which will progressively ask for increasing amounts of money to make a hugely profitable (so it would seem) transaction taking place…please remember to carry out your due diligence and perhaps some of the methods we mention here can be of use so that you distinguish the real from the fake furniture buyers.

Originally phishing scams relied on the greed of the person receiving the email (i.e.: getting your hands on an inheritance that is not yours, receive a portion of a multi-million dollar dormant bank account that is not yours, etc.), asking for advance fees (for legal documents, etc.) is the usual way they work. In the case of the furniture industry, scammers rely on the difficult situation that many furniture producers, retailers, etc. are experiencing and that makes them willing to strike deals without always taking the necessary precautions.

This is a classical example of a phishing scam, just for those who have not yet heard of them. Most people will be amazed that others can fall for these emails but please remember that a highly-educated and high-level Director of a Brazilian bank (Banco Noroeste), Nelson Sakaguchi (read more here) fell for one of these scams and ended up using hundreds of millions of dollars belonging to his employer  before (and even after) realizing he was being fooled, leading to the collapse of the bank.

Scams targeting furniture industry professionals 1

etc., etc., in one way or the other, these basic and original “Nigerian scam” or “phishing” emails are all similar.

A specific symptom of “phishing” victims is that they keep on sending increasing amounts of money at the request of the scammers because it is just impossible for them to believe that they are being scammed and also because the end of the road (the proof that they were right to beleive in the promises, the promised contract or huge payback) is within reach (or so it seems but each time an additional, larger payment is required).

Now let us get more specific with examples related to the furniture industry, in Vietnam and elsewhere, location is not relevant.

Example n° 1 of phishing scams targeting furniture professionals:

Spontaneous email from someone claiming to work with the Government in Ghana and wanting buy your furniture

From: Mr.Samuel Okpo <[email protected]>

Dear Madam/Sir,

An open Tender for the supply of your products to the Government of Ghana.Urgently

furnish us in full details about the standard of your product. We will appreciate it more

if you can give us with detail specification/price lists to avoid making a wrong choice of

product.

Terms of Payment: An upfront payment of 80% (T/T) will be made to your account for

production, while 20% will be paid before shipment.

Mr.Samuel

Some ways to see red flags that should warn you of the potential this email has of being a scam:

* the sender’s email address is [email protected]. A government employee (or serious professional working for a real business) would not normally approach you via a free email account instead of using an email with the domain name of his business. The email adress has a number “10”, this is often symptomatic of email accounts created on free email providers (Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, etc.) by a robot (program or sofware), they use the same prefix and then just add a number as they create hundreds of similar email addresses and accounts. This is because each account can normally only send a limited number of emails and they will need many accounts to spam thousands of potential victims.

The only reason one (professional furniture buyer) would use such an email address (free email like livemail, hotmail, gmail, rocketmail, yahoo, etc.) might be to protect themselves from receiving spam in return if their email address gets shared around and included in spam mailing lists. Most real professionals just use a “throwaway” email address but it is still connected to a real domain belonging to the business (i.e.: “[email protected] or [email protected]), this way then can delete the account if it is heavily spammed later. All consistent leads from the throwaway account are transferred to a more permanent email for future emails related to furniture transactions.

* in this email, the sender seems to be ready to buy your furniture (note that they mention “products” and not specifically “furniture” so they can target across multiple industries with the same template email), despite not knowing much about it or your business. They mention an open tender but, if it really exists, it should mention what kind of furniture they need and for what purpose (libraries, offices, restaurants, etc.), a copy of the tender should be included as well as their specifications, there is none.

* regarding payment terms, they seem too generous to be true, 80% upfront and then 20% upon shipping is not very common but once more, it sounds so good that most furniture sellers will be happy to hear it and eager to learn more, the bait is there.

* regarding means of payment, payments by T/T (telegraphic transfer, bank wire) are ideal for sellers but rarely used by serious and professional furniture buyers who will prefer L/C (letters of credit) to cover their backs at least for an initial transaction.

* it seems you can provide the details of any kind of furniture for any purpose and they will have a look at it, our guess is they will love whatever you send them and the scam will progress from there.

Example n° 2 of phishing scams targeting furniture professionals:

Using a name of an individual or corporation that really exists to make the furniture purchase request seem legitimate and enticing

Another phishing technique, using the name of someone with a position that implies wealth and the ability to import high-end furniture, in this case, the name of a general from Guinea-Buissau is used. You can always look up the name in Wikipedia, like in this case (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonio_Indjai ) but this is just someone impersonating this person and using his name to give credibility to this kind of emails.

Some ways to see red flags that should warn you of the potential this email has of being a scam:
* obviously this sender does not care if you sell furniture or real estate, he is just “phishing” around to see who takes the bait by impersonating this general.

Example n° 3 of phishing scams targeting furniture professionals:

The order for your furniture is approved! Just send us an invoice

Once more, phishing to see who takes the bait, in this case, the order for your furniture seems guaranteed, all you need to do is to send your invoice :-)

Some ways to see red flags that should warn you of the potential this email has of being a scam:
* the English is informal and unprofessional (i.e.:”u” instead of “you”, “Thanks for your much expected understanding”)
* there is a sense of urgency that seems unnatural, to the point that they request a proforma invoice instead of a quotation or price-list without having seen your furniture, this is definitely not a professional request you can trust
* the phone number has no country code though it might still be operational as scammers have an elaborate net of international phone numbers with country codes all redirecting to specific country from which they operate
* the link provided seems very suspicious, better not to click on it in these circumstances

Example n° 4 of phishing scams targeting furniture professionals:

Using fake referrals and other people’s identities

Another enticing email using all the ingredients of a phishing scam, targeting not only furniture manufacturers but potentially (as no specific product is mentioned), all kinds of manufacturers.

Scams targeting furniture industry professionals 2

Here are some typical ingredients:

* the value and interest for your products is already proven, the order is almost there

* link to a website that is not professional (most experienced internet users will know that yolasite.com is a free blogging/website hosting platform, not really for professional use)

* using the name of a reputed businessman with links to Dubai will only enhance interest of those furniture producers that look up the name as the Gulf Coast region is of course a highly attractive market for anyone involved in the furniture industry.

* better not to open the attached zip file unless you run an anti-virus scan for trojan horses or other malicious files within

Example n° 5 of phishing scams targeting furniture professionals:

Highly detailed technical specifications to make the request more legitimate

Some scam emails can contain highly detailed technical specifications that make them seem very credible, at the best, you will waste time preparing an offer, at the worst, you will end up loosing money sending samples, paying fees for entering your tender, paying fees for legal documents necessary for the signature of the contracts that are awaiting you, etc.

2) Internet scams targeting furniture industry professionals: Social Network scams

Fake profiles and impersonations abound in social networks. Here are some examples of how people use social networks to trick or scam furniture producers, retailers and professionals working in the furniture industry.

It must be said that we are quite disappointed with Linkedin for not taking action despite some of these scam posts being flagged as such by users. We see the same profile posting the same posts every several months, in the same furniture groups that are followed by thousands of furniture professionals.

Example n° 1 of social network scams targeting furniture professionals:

Linkedin direct personal email after posting a comment on a discussion thread

A perfect example of impersonating someone even though in this case, it is just the photo that has been used and not the name of the person. This email was went after we participated in a discussion thread at “Association of Furniture Sales Professionals”, a popular (19.000 members) group for furniture professionals.

Dear xxx,

Thanks for your timely response.

I am happy to know that your company is interested to participate in the on-going project been executed by Ministry of Interior, Abia State government-Nigeria. We are open to have a look at what you are offering and willing to introduce your company to the Contract Awarding Committee of the Ministry, If it presents classic brands with good quality.

Some ways to see red flags that should warn you of the potential this email has of being a scam:

* obviously, on a network like Linkedin, the first thing to do is investigate the profile that sent you the message. The first suspicious thing you will notice when visiting this fake profile is that it only has ten contacts which is very strange for an “International consultant” working for the Nigerian government…

Scams targeting furniture industry professionals 4 Tony Mba

* you will also notice the Company name attached to this profile doesn’t exist either, not enough effort was taken to make this profile appear legitimate

* final proof is when you “reverse search” the photo of this profile, any search engine with that capability (you upload the photo and you will see where else on the internet the photo appears) will show you that the photo corresponds to a legitimate businessman that has nothing to do with the profile on LinkedIn:

Scams targeting furniture industry professionals 5 Tony Mba

* the last clue comes from their reply, despite having forwarded some information to them, the answer repeats the request for the same information, this is probably an “auto-respond” function that answers your emails without anyone actually reading them. A human scammer might only read your message after you have replied to two of their automated messages, ensuring they only focus on the “fish” that have bit deep into the bait.

Example n° 2 of social network scams targeting furniture professionals:

Fake job offers for furniture professionals (producers, retailers, consultants, etc.)

Scams targeting furniture industry professionals 6 Michelle Campbell

Despite flagging this post as spam and the fact that several users replied to the thread with comments such as this one,
Scams targeting furniture industry professionals 10 Michelle Campbell

other users continue to this day to post their credentials and references in reply to this post. The real problem is when some follow the link this person has posted and then sign-up (leaving personal data) on the jobsite that is linked to. While we do not have reason to doubt of this jobsite, it is clear that the offer this fake profile makes is very misleading and is done for the sole purpose of gaining affiliate revenues (commissions for getting industry professionals to sign-up on that jobsite).

Some ways to see red flags that should warn you of the potential this email has of being a scam:

* the profile seems obviously fake:

Scams targeting furniture industry professionals 7 Michelle Campbell

5 connections is quite limited, even if you consider quality over quantity.

* the photo on this profile is a stock photo that has been used and abused from dating sites to fake testimonials on different sites, it is definitely not a real photo of “Michelle Campbell”

Scams targeting furniture industry professionals 8 Michelle Campbell

* any ad, post, thread, etc. offering an easy way to get rich or to make money while working at home, immediately should make you wary of a possible scam, so many people would like to earn money like that (either because they are unemployed or would prefer to escape the daily rat race), they will believe any offer pretending to enable them to do so

* this user has posted the same posts of the same nature, tricking user to leave their personal details at this job-site and earning fees for each subscription. While this is not an extremely malicious scam, users are given false expectations of employment (scammer is preying on these harsh times for many furniture professionals) and then will receive emails (from the jobsite) that they really don’t need so the waste of time can be considerable in the long run

Scams targeting furniture industry professionals 9 Michelle Campbell

* for those that know about online marketing (not necessarily one of skills in the quiver of most furniture industry professionals, you will notice that the end of the url that our “friend” Michelle asks us to click on so that we can earn money without even visiting a furniture production site or a contract furniture project,

Scams targeting furniture industry professionals 11 Michelle Campbell

is actually an affiliate link (see the “aff=LI-AVme” at the end of the url). This affiliate link enables the jobsite (zintro.com) to identify which affiliate (a bit like a “sales agent”) got the new subscriber to sign-up and can then pay them the agreed commission fee for getting a new subscriber. I hope people from zintro.com can read this post and take action on this affiliate whose techniques are highly questionable from my point of view (and other Linkedin users of this Contract Furniture Professionals definitely agree and have asked for him/her to be banned and the posts removed, to no avail).

* use your preferred search engine and look up terms like “Stanley Furniture scam”, you will come across sites like scam.com or hoaxbusters.com (my personal favorite to bust most of the hoax/scam emails I’m not 100% sure about). By clicking through, you will see even more furniture industry oriented scams like this one (http://www.scam.com/showthread.php?t=132055):
Scams-targeting-furniture-industry-professionals-12-Stanley-Furniture

Note: Stanley Furniture  is a very well reputed furniture company that obviously is an innocent victim of this scam. As always, scammers use identities of persons or corporations, and in some cases historical events (plane crashes, deaths of African presidents, etc. in phishing scams) that make them look legitimate and irresistible to their victims (who might use a search engine to check if the person, corporation or event exists).

Example n° 3 of social network scams targeting furniture professionals:

Alibaba direct personal email

Alibaba.com is a very famous business network. There are many serious professionals and furniture factories on this platform however, scammers often use this platform either directly (with profiles created on that website) or indirectly (as the example below, they are impersonating the network and try to make you believe the following email is coming from Alibaba.com=.

This scam is using Alibaba.com’s brand and graphics to make you believe that you need to verify your email address. If you don’t do this, you will miss important leads…

Scams targeting furniture industry professionals Alibaba

The main purpose of this kind of scam email is to get you to sign in to another website (usually the graphics of that website have been adapted to make it look like Alibaba.com’s email verification page) and leave your email and password there. Once the bad guys have your email and password on Alibaba.com, they can use it to trick other buyers and sellers on that famous website by making them think they are communicating with you. Your identity will be used to commit fraud and scam other furniture manufacturer, furniture producers and furniture buyers.

This email is well designed as the sender’s email seems to be the “Alibaba Service Team” (mailto:[email protected]) but this can easily be faked, the email itself might be fake or even real (the account has been hacked or the address has been replicated using software that email spammers use).

Some ways to see red flags that should warn you of the potential this email has of being a scam:

Always check the destination url by putting your cursor over the link they ask you to click on (in this case “VERIFY NOW”). You will see the destination is actually http://canadianwatertechnologies.net/admin/login-jsp.html, nothing to do with Alibaba.com

Normally, you would end up with a site looking like Alibaba.com (but with a strange url), in this case, when you click on the “VERIFY NOW”, you can clearly see the site has been hacked (notice the “Hacker inside” on the top left) so you won’t end up giving up your password but most times, unsuspecting users will see an official looking version of a site and enter their login details if they don’t notice the strange and unrelated url.

Scams targeting furniture industry professionals Alibaba 2

This technique is commonly used in other domains, unrelated to furniture. By faking bank or paypal user names and emails so that victims leave their bank or paypal login details.

By checking the destination url carefully you should be aware of it but the best way to avoid problems is to connect to the official website (in this case alibaba.com) and then login to your account. This way you will be sure that you will not be tricked.

Example n° 4 of social network scams targeting furniture professionals:

Tradekey direct personal email

Tradekey.com is another business network and professional directory that is growing in popularity. With increase in popularity and subscribed users, it becomes a target and a vehicle for professional scammers.

Here is an email we received after creating a company profile on Tradekey.com business network:

Scams targeting furniture industry professionals Tradekey 1

This message is quite similar to the one received from an email address pretending to be from Alibaba.com, in this case, Mr. Youssef Abdo is ready to buy some impressive quantities, 10.000 pieces initially and then 50.000 units per year. As it is a standard template, they ask if our price-lists are up to date but we have never published price-lists… As always, a buyer ready to purchase as soon as he receives an invoice, without having asked for a quotation or having seen a furniture sample, is unfortunately to good to be true in the furniture business.

After doing some quick search on the name Youssef Abdo and the company Soluciones Sinergicas QAG, we came acrosss a very similar email:Scams targeting furniture industry professionals Tradekey 2

In this case the quantities of furniture to be ordered are different and the “buyer” does mention that he would like to test the product, so it does seem a bit more professional. However, if you just notice that the links on the email (“Reply Now” button for example), all point to a site that has probably been hijacked where you will be asked to enter your login details to Tradekey.com (and then of course, your online identity in Tradekey will be in the hands of scammers who can use it to trick other victims by posing as being from your company..).

Scams targeting furniture industry professionals Tradekey 3

Just put your mouse cursor on the link and notice in the bottom left of your screen, the link is pointing to a site called yoursvideo.com and not at all Tradekey.com. Most probably the landing page on this site is designed to look like the login page of Tradekey.com. In this case, the phishing attempt has been discovered as you will see this message if you decide to click-through on any link within the message.

Scams targeting furniture industry professionals Tradekey 4

Please always remember to check these kind of emails, in a few seconds following the steps above, you can instantly detect that this a phishing scam attempt targeting furniture professionals.

Update 27/11/14: There must be some virus (trojan probably) that infects our email since we just received an email from a metal wire mesh producer in China who received the same email as above and is replying to us, thinking we are the honourable Mr. Youssef Abdo… what is worrying forus is that our email address appears as the sender so definitely this email (the one we received earlier) took over our mailbox address and sent out more emails using our address. Here is the answer from the Chinese wire mesh producer, one more person that believes Mr. Abdo’s inquiry is legitimate:

3) Internet scams targeting furniture industry professionals: Brand impersonation scams

These are scams that did not target us directly but that are prevalent on the internet and that target directly furniture professionals, using and impersonating famous furniture brands.

These scams target unsuspecting furniture buyers by pretending to supply either furniture from famous and well reputed furniture brands or by other means like fake account receivable statements (the victim expects to receive money from clients -accounts receivables- of the furniture brand and then pocket a commission before sending back the balance to the furniture brand). Some scammers also use fake job offers from famous furniture brands in order to get victims to pays job application processing fees, of course, once the fee is paid, there is no job available. These scammers even send fake checks to their victims to make them believe all is fine and that they can send back a small fee.

Example n° 1 of furniture brand impersonation scams targeting furniture professionals:

Ashley Furniture, a reputed brand systematically impersonated by scammers

This reputable company has had its identity used so often in numerous scams that it even had to publish a warning on its own site:

Example n° 2 of furniture brand impersonation scams targeting furniture professionals:

Thomasville Furniture, a reputed brand systematically impersonated by scammers

Another reputed furniture company in the UK has also been misrepresented by scammers trying to trick furniture buyers into irresistible deals and fake furniture purchases. This is now a well-known scam called “door-to-door furniture scam”

4) Internet scams targeting furniture industry professionals: Other scams

We would like our readers to contribute their experience here, we will gladly add your feedback here to make this post as useful as possible to our colleagues and hopefully, avoid disappointments in the future for some of us.

There are many varieties of scams going on at any given time, it seems that Craiglist is  a platform frequently used by scammers to trick private furniture buyers.

One last word of advice, if you want to be aware of your brand being misrepresented on the internet, just use a simple alert function available in major search engines so that you receive an email every time your brand is mentioned on the internet. For bigger furniture corporations, an e-reputation strategy is recommended and can be done either in-house or through a service provider.

If you know of a scam targeting either furniture professionals or furniture buyers, please do comment on this post or send us an email so we can include it in this post.

Example n° 1 of other kinds of scams targeting furniture professionals:

Elaborate e-mail with download form within a quotation request

Once more it seems like the need is urgent and that your products will be purchases as soon as you submit a quotation. This scam is a bit more elaborate as you will be invited to use a download window to obtain the precious PDF document with the furniture specifications….this window asks for your name, email address and password. Many victims might enter their email and password here and then become the object of identity theft..

The email body goes something like this (note how they use the identity of a real and reputable business to create interest BUT the email address ending in dane.gov.co is already looking phoney):

Update 27/10/2014: Other emails that are coming in every day…

******** end of suspicious email **********************

Easy steps to detect that this is a suspicious email:

email scams targeting furniture producers and retailers

1) The sender is a gmail account with some reference to DHL ([email protected]), this is obviously a robot-generated email account.
2) It has been sent to several recipients at the same time (To: undisclosed recipients) and your email is in Bcc (blank carbon copy so invisible to other recipients of the same email, same reason you don’t see their addresses either)
3) They want you to visit a website on yolasite.com domain, this is a platform for free blogging or free websites, not an option for a truly professional buyer or inquiry, let alone if they ask you to login to whatever form you might find if you follow that link.
4) The postal address
Mr.Bryan Mobley
8000 Bent Branch Dr.
Irving, TX 75063 USA
is probably fake or copied from a reputable source, just copy/paste it into your most trusted search engine and you will find something like this:

email scams targeting furniture producers and retailers 2

You can then see that the entire email has already been used before, published on this Yahoo Group (called “f-r-i-e-n-d-z
“????) and that the url they ask you to follow in that one is slightly different (probably they were caught by yolasite and have created several similar websites on that platform).

Stay safe and please share any scam attempts that you may have encountered, thank you for reading!

How to distinguish a luxury sofa from the rest of sofas available in Vietnam

Posted on by Imagine Vietnam / Posted in luxury-sofas | Tagged , , , , | 4 Comments

In a previous post, we discussed two essential tests that are carried out to measure the durability of a fabric used in the production of a sofa: The Martindale and the Pilling tests.

A luxury sofa will naturally be made with fabric that achieves high scores in both these tests. See the results of the fabrics used to make our Danish sofas here. Most of the sofas available in stores in Vietnam and around the world cannot meet these stringent requirements (more than 35.000 cycles for the Martindale test and Pilling degree scale of 4-5).

In a future post, we will discuss the quality of leather to be used in a luxury sofa.

Beneath the design and the upholstery of a sofa (fabric or leather), is the core which is made of the frame, the suspension and the cushion filling.

In this post we will review these other features that are essential in the production of a high-end sofa, one that you will keep for many years to come, enjoying every moment.

Features such as the frame, suspension and cushion filling are paramount to the overall quality of a sofa. The large spectrum of differences in these features from one sofa producer to another explain the huge variance in factory prices. Of course, retailers will apply their margins which can be more or less exaggerated and this systematically leads to inflated prices for the few quality sofas that are available for purchase in Saigon, Hanoi or in any major city in South-East Asia.

The Danish sofas we offer are at the top of the pyramid of luxury sofas yet the prices we can offer online are well within the reach of the average consumer because we will send them directly from our partner’s factory to your home, without all the overhead of a classical brick and mortar store.

Frame

The frame is the inner core of the structure of a sofa. The frame will have a direct impact on the comfort and quality of sofa. As furniture professionals know well, quality is present well below the looks (design and fabric used) of a sofa and that the quality of the frame will dictate the ensuing quality of the finished product.

We have visited countless sofa factories in Vietnam and neighbouring countries, most of the sofas we have examined would not fare well if they were stripped bare. Rare are those that would stand proud, many are those that would redden in shame.

Most of the frames used in producing mainstream and high volume sofas are made of standard or sub-standard plywood which is stapled. The frames in our Danish sofas are made of solid pine wood that is glued, dowelled and screwed to ensure durability and comfort. There are also reinforcing blocks in the corners to provide extra support.

The ideal sofa frame is made of solid wood that has been kiln dried with a few parts made of furniture grade plywood or mdf. Kiln drying removes the moisture contained within the wood and will prevent warping and cracking in the future. Furniture grade mdf or plywood is several layers thicker than the standard version and is only used where it is technically required within the frame.

The frames from our Danish partner are made of solid pine wood and some components are in mdf. Such is the importance of this structure in a sofa meant to last for many years that the production of the frames is trusted to a Swedish company specialized in manufacturing frames for high-end sofas. This partnership between a Swedish company producing sofa frames and a Danish company producing luxury cushions, upholstery and of course designs for several generations will guarantee that you purchase a truly Scandinavian sofa that is without doubt an exceptional furniture item.

Our frames are covered with a profile of hard pressed foam before adding high resilient foam so as to avoid any sensation of “feeling the frame” and provide maximum comfort.

Suspension

All experts will agree, the best way to implement a long lasting and comfortable seating support system requires highly skilled craftsmanship and the most recent high grade components.

Modern springs, are of the horizontal kind, with an “S” shape, running from the front of the seat to the back of the sofa and are used in contemporary designs as they require less space. Webbing can also be used and you will see bands crossing the seating support. For optimal quality, a tensioner is required to ensure that the webbing is securely attached to the frame, once more, the skill of the craftsman is essential for enduring quality and comfort.

producing a luxury sofa in Vietnam 6

The use of coils, one the best alternatives in the past, is receding due to innovation in this essential domain. The modern springs, know also as sinuous construction, avoid sagging over time.

All the seating suspension sytems in our sofas are at the cutting edge of recent technology and they are hand-tied by skilled craftsment in order to ensure maximum performance and durability.

Cushions

The cushions (seating and back-rests) are the part of the sofa you will be in immediate contact with and must make you oblivious to all the rest of the sofa. As a matter of fact, all the components of the sofa must compose together one unique and irresistible note: maximum comfort.

The premium choice for the filling will obviously be down/feather filling for a soft and comfortable cushion. However, a cushion that is exclusively filled of feathers will be too soft and loose its original shape very quickly. Combining down and balls fibers is an expensive option reserved for sofas sought by the most discerning customers.

producing a luxury sofa in Vietnam producing a luxury sofa in Vietnam 8Each cushion is carefully crafted to comply with standards acquired over 50 years of experience making luxury sofas for the most demanding customers. producing a luxury sofa in Vietnam 7 Real down (feathers), pure luxury rarely available in sofas across the world. These Danish sofas are now available for purchase in Vietnam.

The seat cushions of our Danish sofas are made of highly resilient foam (density 35 kg/cbm) wrapped around a core of down and ball fibres.

The back cushions of our sofas are a mix of down and ball fibers without any foam insert.

The quality of comfort you can achieve in this way is very rare and is seldom found in any sofa unless you are (or the retailer you are buying it from) importing it into Vietnam with all the implications that implies on the price.

Quality of the fabrics used in the production of our Danish sofas sold online in Vietnam

Posted on by Imagine Vietnam / Posted in luxury-sofas | Tagged , , , | 1 Comment

The fabrics used by our Danish partner undergo extensive testing to check their durability. These tests are carried out by the independent and globally acknowledged quality testing firm SGS, either in Denmark or in Asia.

A high end fabric used in the production of luxury sofas must be resistant to the formation of pills during washing and regular wear that cause loose fibers to appear on the surface of the cloth.

There are two main tests carried out in the textile industry to determine the quality and resistance of a specific fabric: Martindale and Pilling tests.

Before beginning the the Martindale test, the fabric being tested is pulled taut and loaded onto the lower plates of the Martindale machine.  The test begin when small discs of worsted wool or wire mesh (the abradant) are continually rubbed against the fabric specimens in a Lissajous figure – a wandering, oscillating circle.  At regular intervals, the fabric is inspected for wear and tear. When two yarns break or when there is a noticeable change in appearance, the test is concluded and the number of cycles noted precisely for comparison with other fabric samples.

The performance of the fabrics used by our Danish partner in the production of their high end sofas is well above the industry standards. Most fabric and textile suppliers (China being one of the biggest suppliers) are under 20.000 cycles in the Martindale test (abrasion) and accept a pilling degree scale of 3-4 while the fabric used in our Danish sofas exceeds well beyond 30.000 cyles (some achieve 90.000) and have a pilling degree of minimum 4-5 (5 being the highest possible degree).

You can now buy these luxury sofas in Vietnam online and benefit from the high standards available in our range. Delivery to your home in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), Hanoi and elsewhere in Vietnam. Delivery is also possible in neighbouring countries (Thailand, Cambodia and Laos).

UMA furniture, the first western and contemporary style retailer to open in Vietnam (Hanoi and HCMC)

Posted on by Imagine Vietnam / Posted in designer-furniture | Tagged , , , , , , , , , | Leave a comment

In our post today we’d like to present UMA, one of the most appreciated furniture retailers in town by expats and Vietnamese alike. UMA has huge merit in the sense that it has filled the huge void existing in the furniture retail scene for consumers that were looking for modern or western looking furniture in a store environment reminiscent in many aspects of the Swiss behemoth of furniture retail, IKEA.

When visiting a UMA shop for the first time, it did seem like we were visiting a mini-IKEA since the array of available products really go through many ranges related to home furnishings and decoration equipment. This concept has taken off and now UMA enjoys up to seven locations around Vietnam, mainly in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City, HCMC) and Hanoi.

UMA Sai Gon Pearl: 92 Nguyen Huu Canh, Q. Binh Thanh, HCMC, (+848) 3514 9795 / (+848) 3514 9793
UMA Phu My Hung: 1419 – 1421 Nguyen Van Linh, Dist.7, HCMC, (+848) 5412 3728 / (+848) 5412 3729
UMA Phan Xich Long: 287-289-291 Phan Xich Long, Phu Nhuan Dist, HCMC,(+848) 3517 2732 / (+848) 3517 2742
UMA Doi Can: 147 Doi Can, Ha Noi, (+844) 3722 7646
UMA Lo Duc: 210 Lo Duc, Ha Noi, (+844) 3972 7412 / (+844) 3972 7411
UMA My Dinh: CT6 My Dinh Song Da, Me Tri, Ha Noi, (+844) 3787 5407 / (+844) 3787 7286
UMA Savico: 7 – 9 Nguyen Van Linh, Gia Lam, Ha Noi, (+844) 6257 3286 / (+844) 6296 4862

Uma furniture shop in Lo Duc (Hanoi)

The price range is very convenient for those looking to purchase low to middle priced western style furniture, with acceptable quality. This was the same idea and concept that brought the worldwide success of IKEA and the reason so many people are waiting for the Swedish giant to open its doors to the Vietnamese customers, supposedly in 2015.

UMA started its operations in 2006 and was founded by three dynamic entrepreneurs who understood perfectly the opportunity in the home furnishing and decoration market as well as the lack of competition for reasonably priced western style furniture. The first collection was designed by Rebecca Uth and Maya Robert.

In 2007, the first UMA retail store was opened in Tran Huy Lieu, Hanoi and a second one followed in My Dinh.

In 2008, another furniture store was opened in Lo Duc.

In 2009, besides opening another furniture shop in Doi Can (Hanoi), two landmark events took place that year: the launching of the internet site and the employment of their hundredth employee.

2010 was the year that UMA opened its first furniture shop in HCMC (Phu My Hung, District 7).

As you can see, an impressive track record of a very dynamic company, setting the benchmark for furniture retail in Vietnam.

We are happy to bring new options to the discerning customer in Vietnam who is looking to purchase furniture for his home, office or hotel project. In our case, we only work with high-end and luxury products so our customer base will probably be different from the core of UMA’s faithful customers.

In any event, the choice and options of purchasing French, Italian or Scandinavian (Danish) furniture in Vietnam are getting more and more varied and this will definitely benefit consumers wherever they may be, HCMC or Hanoi, Da Nang or Nha Trang, you name it, the horizon for decorating your home is expanding by the minute.

Happy shopping and especially, beautiful homes everyone 😉 !

Bo Concept Saigon (HCMC), your only option for purchasing Scandinavian furniture in Vietnam (Saigon / HCMC, Hanoi, etc.)?

Posted on by Imagine Vietnam / Posted in designer-furniture, luxury-sofas | Tagged , , , , , , , , | Leave a comment

In one of our previous posts, we discussed the arrival of IKEA to Ho Chi Minh City. This will be a ground-breaking moment for many people in need of reliable furniture and lots of friends are awaiting their arrival, expected in 2015, to Vietnam.

While we, over here at Luxury Furniture in Vietnam, unconditionally admire the huge success of this Swedish brand and also have a few items in our own houses (lamps, mirrors and even a wonderful cheese-grater), we consider our range of Scandinavian (Danish in our case) furniture to be entirely different from IKEA so we are aiming for an entirely different audience, the people in Vietnam who love designer and luxury furniture.

Today we will present another Scandinavian brand that is present in Vietnam, in this case, the designer and contemporary lines that are typical of Scandinavian and Danish design are truly present. All of those who are passionate about design bounced with joy when Bo Concept opened its first store in Saigon (HCMC), Vietnam, a few years ago.

While the products are definitely beautiful and truly designer and high-end furniture items, the price tags in this store are not for the faint of heart and this is why we aim to bring an alternative to shopping for designer and luxury furniture, in particular Danish (Scandinavian) furniture to Vietnam, wherever you may be, in Saigon, Hanoi, Nha Trang or elsewhere.

Bo concept was founded in 1952 by Jens Ærthøj and Tage Mølholm, both were accomplished carpenters, craftsmen and cabinet makers. The first production runs involved cabinets made with oak veneer and walnut.

After two years of activity, in 1954, Bo concept consisted of the two original owners and their four employees. These first two years (1952-1954) of activity enabled them to move into a new factory which they named the ‘Ærthøj-Jensen and Mølholm Møbelfabrik’.

Commercial success followed their industrial innovation in the furniture sector as well as their enormous creative talent which reflected the trend of functional furniture that was prevalent in the Danish design of their time. In 1962, spurred by their success, the founders of Bo Concept inaugurated a 1300 square meter factory that is still to this day, one of their main locations. Wall applications as well as dining-room furniture were the main products being produced during that period.

In the early 70’s, bed-room furniture is incorporated into the range of products made by this innovative Danish designer furniture company and the employee structure is doubled due to ongoing success.

Bo Concept’s original names go from A/S ÆJM (when it was became a  limited company) to Denka in the late seventies. Under the name Denka, numerous innovations come to light such as modular furniture (bookshelves) which enable the customer to choose their own composition.

Modular furniture is a recurrent concept in Scandinavian furniture, the possibilities are infinite and they involve from bookshelves, kitchen layouts to sofas. Check out our Danish modular sofa here.

In 1984, the company went public and was listed in the Copenhagen Stock Exchange. It is also the advent of knock-down furniture, a type of furniture that has made Swedish furniture giant IKEA famous the world over. Knockdown furniture is also essential for many retailers due to the enormous savings achieved when shipping these items from the furniture factories (mostly in Asia) to the different furniture outlets around the world and, finally, to the customers’ residences.

In 1993, Bo Concept appears as a commercial brand and a concept store in Paris, France. Seven more stores are opened in France, China and the USA, enabling the owners to test their concept across three continents and three significant consumer markets, with very different tastes, across the globe.

Bo Concept arrived in Vietnam very recently, to the delight of all of us who love furniture and are passionate about designer and contemporary styles.

Their first store (actually a franchise run by AA Corporation, one of the major actors in the furniture industry in Vietnam) is located in downtown Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), Vietnam:

After visiting the store in HCMC, definitely the furniture on display is eye-catching and I would love to have a few pieces in my home  😀 ! After conversing with the staff in the shop, I learned that the wooden furniture is made in Denmark, in their own factory, wow, imported furniture all the way from Denmark, that is true luxury. Regarding the upholstered furniture (sofas, armchairs, etc.) it seems it is made in China. I imagine this implies huge customs duties upon import to Vietnam. It is not clear whether the factories in China producing these furniture items are the property of Bo Concept or if they are mere subcontractors. However, it does seem clear that high standards of quality are efficiently managed as the products really look and feel perfect. The price tag is very steep though, probably out of reach for many Danish and Scandinavian furniture lovers in Saigon (HCMC), Hanoi or anywhere else in Vietnam.

This is one reason we aim to bring Danish furniture online to Vietnam that is of the highest quality (above including what you will see in Bo Concept and in our case, produced by a Danish owned factory in Saigon belonging to a Danish furniture producer with more than 60 years experience in producing luxury and designer sofas) and of Scandinavian contemporary design. Check out our range of high-end Danish designer sofas, now available online in Vietnam and compare this other option for purchasing contemporary and designer Danish (Scandinavian) furniture online.

IKEA Saigon: the only option for purchasing Scandinavian furniture in Vietnam (Saigon / HCMC, Hanoi, etc.)?

Posted on by Imagine Vietnam / Posted in luxury-sofas | Tagged , , , , , | 1 Comment

Ikea is definitely the major success story in global furniture retail. Wherever it has opened its doors, customers have been enthusiastic to purchase the functional furniture on offer along with the Scandinavian names attached to each item.

Every year, the new IKEA catalogue is sought and collected by avid fans.

Inter IKEA Systems B.V. was established in 1983 in the Netherlands and was the initial step taken toward globalization. Most of the international expansion, especially in Asia, is carried out through a system of franchises.

Major subcontractors (factories producing the furniture sold in IKEA stores) are located in China, India and of course Vietnam.

But…is IKEA the only option for buying Scandinavian furniture in Vietnam and abroad? It all depends on the type of furniture you are looking for and the budget you are ready to allocate to your furnishing project. Price-wise, this famous retailer is very efficient in delivering quality products at low prices. The inconvenience, most of us Europeans (as we have been buying furniture from IKEA for a long time) realize, is that, due to the huge commercial success, their products are everywhere so you should not mind “sharing” your choices or interior decoration. This means that the lamp, stool or sofa that you bought and that you are rightly very proud of, will also be in the homes of your friends and thousands of other people. Nothing wrong with that for sure! Just don’t expect exclusivity and you will be fine.

IKEA will soon be in Saigon and perhaps elsewhere in Vietnam, Hanoi being another probable location. Estimates say that this will happen in 2015. For a huge majority, this will be a great event and we also will be happy to share the online furniture scene with this behemoth of furniture retail.

Our website, luxury furniture in Vietnam, aims to reach a much smaller public which is looking to buy furniture in Saigon, Hanoi and elsewhere in Vietnam that has nothing in common with the furniture on offer in IKEA stores in Saigon or in any city of the world.

We focus on designer furniture made by exclusive furniture manufacturers that specialize in high-end and luxury furniture. The sofas we sell are 100% Scandinavian. Ours are produced in Vietnam by a factory under direct ownership and management by a renowned Danish furniture producer while IKEA’s are produced in other Asian countries by subcontractors.

Actually, we cannot compare our furniture range with the offer in IKEA stores in Saigon, Hanoi (to come), etc. We aim to supply the top of the market buyers that are looking for exclusive designs and high-quality components combined with the manufacturing skills acquired by a Danish family owned business over several generations. Luxury upholstered furniture is our common denominator so obviously, we are in another field compared to IKEA which is a perfect option for medium range buyers looking to make a price oriented purchase of mainstream designs above all.

With the advent of IKEA opening in Saigon in 2015, the spectrum of choices for buying Scandinavian furniture in Saigon, Hanoi and elsewhere in Vietnam will be rich and diverse, the best situation for all customers looking to purchase furniture whether it is luxury furniture or more functional  and price-oriented furniture.

We will strive to bring to you the best option for Scandinavian design and luxury finishing with our range of sofas available online in Saigon, Hanoi and across Vietnam. Competition is healthy for all parties involved (buyers, sellers and competitors), it would be wrong to see it otherwise.

Good shopping to all!

Tips on buying furniture Laos online: how to buy the best sofa in Laos?

Posted on by Imagine Vietnam / Posted in luxury-furniture, luxury-sofas | Tagged , , , , , , | 2 Comments

About right now, in 2013, a majority of the resident population of Laos would love to buy furniture online. Shopping for furniture online is very convenient since you get to choose the item you want while waiting for it right at the comfort of your home. There are many types of furniture made in Laos including wooden tables, marble chairs and wooden compartment items (buffets, sideboards, etc.).

Unfortunately for those living in Laos, there are not many options for buying furniture online, like for example a sofa, in Laos. If we consider that ten years ago, in 2003, there were only four furniture factories in Laos, this is easy to understand. We mean of course furniture producers with a certain size that can be qualified as Laos furniture producers and factories. Furniture factories in Laos are rare though and very few foreigners have chosen to invest in this industry. A notable foreign project is a Danish furniture factory in Laos run by a Dane, Ejnar Jorgensen.

A recurring concern in the furniture business is the sustainable use of wood and the protection of Laos’s forests and timber. Please always take this into consideration when choosing a furniture supplier in Laos.

In 2013 we have witnessed the launching of a new website whose aim is to make luxury and designer furniture available to discerning customers around the South-East Asia region in countries like Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and of course, Laos. Never before was such an exclusive and high-end collection of furniture (locally produced furniture or imported furniture to Laos) available.

Mosaic tables and wrought iron furniture in Vietnam

Mosaic tables available online in Laos

If you are shopping online and are looking to buy the perfect Laos sofa, before touching that order button, here are some tips you should remember whenever trying to buy from Laos:

1) Buy from a trusted online furniture retailer in Laos

It is no secret there is a growing number of online retailers or shops selling furniture to residents in Laos but not all of them are trusted sellers. In the furniture online business, and Laos is no exception to the norm, there are some websites that are a scam so better take a look at their testimonials to see if a lot of people were happy with their service. This is not always easy to find and reviews coming from Laos furniture customers are rare. There are a lot of online sellers who would show what other customers thought about them by showing real customer testimonials. If you can’t find any customer testimonials from the online sellers you would like to buy your Laos sofa from then you can always ask your friends in order to find out which one of them is a good seller or a dependable retailer. You can now write down what they say in order to arrive at a good conclusion. You will never regret dealing with a trusted Laos furniture seller because they will always want to achieve complete customer satisfaction until the deal is done and most importantly, after the sofa Laos has been delivered to your home. The same can’t be said if you decide to deal with an unestablished online seller because they may still be testing the waters if that is indeed what they want to do. It may result in a lot of problems such as a lack of an efficient after-sales service which may make you regret your decision of dealing with them for the purchase of your sofa in Laos.

Luxury and designer barbecues, grills and outdoor kitchens, now available for purchase online (http://luxury-furniture-vietnam.com/) and delivery to your home or hotel in Laos

2) Take your time buying furniture in Laos

There are a lot of options for buying a Sofa Laos so you may want to take your time especially since that item is not known to be cheap, especially if you are looking for durable quality. You can also get the opinions of trusted friends while you browse through the items that are already available. There is really no deadline in buying each item so there is no point in hurrying unless you want to give a gift to your niece the very next day. However, if that is the case then you should have done your canvassing a long time ago and not at the last minute  😀 You will never be able to purchase a good furniture item like a luxury Laos sofa if you decide to do some last minute shopping. If there is an upcoming occasion then better prepare for it in order to avoid being upset.

3) Don’t settle for second hand furniture in Laos

One popular tip roaming around the neighborhood is to never buy a second hand item especially if you are looking to buy a sofa in Laos. There is a good reason why the item is being sold by the seller and he could do something to cover it up or simply, it has been used and worn by the previous years of use. He could tell you that he is leaving the country which is the reason why he is selling it. However, you will never find out the real reason it is being sold. This is why it is better to go for brand new items. You can be sure you are going to be the first person to use that item.

If you are looking for high-end and luxury furniture that you can purchase from the comfort of your home in Laos, whether you are in Vientiane or Luang Prabang, there is a new and exceptional option on the internet now in 2013! Danish, Italian and English furniture factories that are specialized in luxury furniture items are now offering their exclusive and original furniture creations online with the possibility of ordering these items and having them delivered to your door.

This exclusive furniture is also available for Laos hotels that are seeking luxury furniture for their hotel projects. If you are the manager of a Hotel Laos that is searching for new and original designer furniture for a furnishing and interior decoration project in one of your hotels, this website will be a rare treat for you.

Posted on by Imagine Vietnam / Posted in luxury-furniture, luxury-sofas | Tagged , , , , , , | Leave a comment

Cambodia is a beautiful nation that provides tourists with an incredible experience. There are quite a lot of people residing in Cambodia (local and expats) wanting to know where to buy affordable yet contemporary and high-end furniture in Cambodia.

There is a lot of different furniture you can shop for in Cambodia, including wooden chairs, office tables and chairs, rocking chairs, dining tables with chair sets, patio furniture, beds, and everything in between. Shopping online for furniture enables you to buy many different kinds of furniture from auction websites, online furniture websites, as well as sites offering used or secondhand furniture. Buying furniture online is a lot different from buying furniture in the stores. The main reason many people are buying furniture online rather than buying them at the stores is that many sites offer heavy discounts due to extreme competition as well as the availability of huge catalogs, wide range of designs, and also it saves a lot of time. Plus, you can do all this from the comfort of your home. If you prefer to buy furniture online, it is always recommended to check the furniture physically at the time of delivery before signing any delivery papers.

If you run a quick search on Google for the term “furniture Cambodia”, you will typically come across these results:

1) A link to the Cambodian yellow pages and the business listings for the category furnishings

2) The inevitable links to the Ali Baba website displaying furniture producers from Cambodia. This data is not very useful for the private buyer.

3) Links to local websites that despite their claims of modern and contemporary furniture, offer some very classical furniture, either office furniture or home furniture with typical Khmer style.

If you prefer to buy your furniture at a store in Cambodia, you need to take a few things into consideration so that you can buy furniture that lasts a long time. First of all, check the frame of the furniture; avoid buying furniture with frames made up of softwood, plastic, particleboard, or even metal as they tend to crack easily. Also do not forget to check the joints of your furniture, as these tend to have the most problems. If you’re buying sofas in Cambodia, you need to choose the sofas which are made of durable material such as linen or cotton.

Phnom Penh, the commercial center and the capital of Cambodia, is one of the best places to shop for furniture in Cambodia with a lot of variety of furniture on sale. In the capital, there are over 150 shops that are made up of thatched roofs and bamboo, offering sale of many different kinds of wooden furniture, wooden crafts as well as traditional rattan furniture. There are usually two kinds of rattan furniture – the natural rattan and the synthetic rattan. Natural rattan should be preferably used only indoors, as it needs to be protected from direct sunlight, rain, etc. Synthetic rattan is recommended for outdoor furniture, as it can resist tougher weather conditions. Sofas made of rattan are quite popular in Cambodia.
